Pure Land Chanting Session at ULU - SUN 19th

Dear Friends,

We would like to let you know that ULUBUDA has organized a Pure Land Chanting session this Sunday at ULU. Details below:

Sunday 19th Nov
Time: 2pm - 5pm
Venue: Room 3C, ULU (Direction)

Schedule:
2pm - 3pm -> Introduction and discussion on Pure Land Teaching
3pm - 5pm -> You may do the whole 2 hours and leave any time during the chanting.

This is a good chance to find out more about Pure Land Buddhism and try one of the Pure Land Practice. We will be chanting the Name Amitabha Buddha in Chinese (Amituofo). Here is a short description of Pure Land Buddhism:

What is Pure Land?

[Pure Land comprises the schools] of East Asia which emphasize aspects of Mahayana Buddhism stressing faith in Amida, meditation on and recitation of his name, and the religious goal of being reborn in his “Pure Land,” or “Western Paradis.” (Crim, Perennial Dictionary of World Religionso.)

The most common Pure Land practice is the recitation of Amitabha Buddha’s name. This should be done with utmost faith and a sincere vow to achieve rebirth in the Pure Land.

Along with this popular form of Pure Land, there is a higher aspect, in which Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life, is equated with our Buddha Nature, infinitely bright and everlasting (Self-Nature Amitabha, Mind-Only Pure Land).

Meaning of Namo Amitabha (Amituofo)

“Namo Amitabha Buddha” (meaning homage to the Amitabha Buddha, and the name “Amitabha” means boundless light and infinite life), “Amitabha Buddha,” or simply, but with equal reverence, “Amitabha.”

~ Quoted from On Chanting…

Recitation is one of the central practices of Pure Land Buddhism. It involves the concentrated and heartfelt repetitive recitation of “Namo Amitabha Buddha” (Homage to the Buddha of Boundless Compassion and Wisdom). In Chinese this phrase is “Namo Omito-Fo” or “Namo Amituofo”, in Japanese, “Namu Amida Butsu.”
