As I understand it, as a beginner, it is good to recite the Buddha's name.  It is straightforward and beneficial.  Sutras are good, but beyond the means of the average beginner.

I have been reading a number of books provided and/or published by HwaZhan/AMTB.  These are great books and of a very high quality.  If anybody asks me about Chinese culture or Buddhism, it is always books provided by AMTB/HZ groups.

When I first became interested in Buddhism, "Liao Fan's Four Stories" (了凡四訓) inspired me to change.  What is really good about this book is that it brings the practical issues and Buddhist and Daoist solutions.  You can read it like a novel and it is very enjoyable.  So good, I even have a copy of the movie on VCD.

Recently I recieved a copy of the DVD "俞淨意公 遇灶神記" (I don't know of the English title).  This is very good also.  Has anybody seen it too?  What do you think?  I wish there was an English translation of the book.

There is a book called "Good Questions, Good Answers", which provides a good introduction to Buddhism.  However, moralistic storybooks provides something for people who need to see the fruits of good virtue and karma, by people who have experienced these things.

Another book I know Master Chin Kung had been teaching is the "The Tablet of Supreme Correspondence" (太上感篇).  I have heard this is a very good book, but I have problems finding a copy.  I have asked Daoist, and it can be found in their Daoist Canon (The Daoist Tripitaka).  It is not easy to find, but I should not stop.
